How to prepare GSTR-1 from your saved bills

GSTR-1 is the monthly (or quarterly) return of your sales. This tool reads the invoices, cash memos and notes you already saved and lays them out table by table, the way the GST portal asks.

Step by step

  1. Make your bills first. Tax invoices on billing., cash memos with GST, and credit or debit notes are read from this browser's data home. You type nothing again.
  2. Choose the business and the period. One month, or one quarter under QRMP. Choose your turnover band, so HSN codes are checked for the right number of digits.
  3. Read the warnings. Missing HSN codes, wrong buyer GSTINs, gaps in your number series and notes whose original invoice is not saved are listed at the top. Fix the bills on their own site, then press Read saved bills again.
  4. Check each table. B2B bills one by one with the buyer GSTIN; small B2C sales added up by state and rate; notes; the HSN summary split into B2B and B2C.
  5. Download the JSON. Download JSON for the GST portal checks every bill first and lists anything to fix; when all is well it saves one JSON file.
  6. Upload and file. On the GST portal: Returns › GSTR-1 › Prepare Offline › Upload, pick the JSON, check the summary and file with your own login.

Worked example

October 2026: 14 B2B invoices (₹3,20,000 taxable, ₹57,600 GST), cash memos to consumers in Punjab ₹48,000 at 18% (B2CS, one line: Punjab, 18%, ₹48,000, tax ₹8,640), one credit note ₹5,000 + ₹900. The HSN summary shows each HSN with quantity, taxable value and tax. Due date: 11 November (monthly filer).

Rules and dates

GSTR-1 is due on the 11th of the next month (monthly) or the 13th after the quarter (QRMP). From the October 2026 period the portal asks the HSN summary in separate B2B and B2C tables. Invoices to unregistered buyers in another state above ₹1 lakh go to B2CL. Check the latest portal advisories before filing.
