GSTR-1 upload: JSON or the offline tool

The tool gives you the GSTR-1 in two forms. Most people upload the JSON straight to the portal; others like to open it in the government's Returns Offline Tool first.

Step by step

  1. Route 1: JSON. Download JSON for the GST portal › on the portal Returns › GSTR-1 › Prepare Offline › Upload › choose the file. Wait for "processed", then check the summary and file.
  2. Route 2: Offline tool. Download the Excel workbook (or All CSV files) in the layout of the GST Returns Offline Tool, open it in the tool, generate the JSON there and upload it.
  3. If the portal reports errors. Download its error report, fix the bills here, read saved bills again and upload once more.

Worked example

An accountant prefers the offline tool: she imports the Excel workbook, sees the same 14 B2B lines and the HSN summary, and generates the JSON there.
